CHAPTER FOURTEEN

They left the elders behind in the chamber when they went to look for Trissa’s notes. The five drow were shaken, but they had lived too long to quickly admit defeat. The last time Ellis looked over her shoulder, they were cross-legged on the floor in a tight knot, their heads together. They had not cast a muffling spell but were speaking too quietly for her to hear them from a distance.

Ellis did not mistake their calmness for ambivalence. Katya nurtured a fury perceptible in her eyes. Rather than act rashly, however, she was channeling the red-hot emotion into planning, supported by her peers.

As they reached the hidden entrance to the Homestead, Sebastian pulled Ellis into a private conference.

“Here.” He handed her a small device and explained how it worked. The cloaker produced an eight-foot invisibility sphere around its origin point. When Ellis’ hand wrapped around it, she felt a surge of shame. She should be able to turn invisible without mechanical assistance, and the device felt like a mockery.

“What’s wrong?” Sebastian asked.

“It feels like…cheating. It’s not real shadow magic.”

Sebastian’s lip twitched, but he hid his annoyance. She hadn’t meant it as an insult, but he had taken it that way. He’d never had access to shadow magic. “It’ll really make you invisible.”

“Sorry.” Ellis gestured apologetically. “I didn’t mean—”

Sebastian waved the apology away. “The cloakers can’t be dispelled by lightsilk. How’s that for real?”

Ellis’ curiosity spiked, and she spent a minute discussing what Sebastian had gone through at the DRI. Taking it in was a struggle. “We never should have trusted Chan.”

Connor, who had joined them, shrugged. “I never did.”

“We can debrief more after we get out of here,” Sebastian suggested.

“You’re right,” Ellis agreed. “Let’s focus on the potion.”

She flicked the cloaker on. Techno-invisibility would take some getting used to. She could feel the change in air temperature but not the shadow magic. Normally, she could adjust the invisibility envelope on the fly, extending or retracting it depending on the circumstances. With the cloaker, she was stuck with eight feet. Anyone who got closer would see her.

“Skilled shadow mages can sense it,” Sebastian added. “So try not to wallop them with the envelope.”

“Copy that.” Ellis passed through the gap in the rock wall into the Homestead.

Trissa’s laboratory shared a wall with the infirmary. Unfortunately, the fight in the speaker’s chamber had caused more than a few injuries, and the corridors were packed with drow carrying messages, delivering supplies, and checking on loved ones. They had to double back through the halls several times before they could slip inside Trissa’s lab. Lola had not reassigned the space, and it looked like Ellis remembered. The desk was piled with scrolls and journals, which Ellis divided into two stacks, sliding half to her father. Sebastian paced just inside the door, peering into the corridor to watch for interruptions.

Most of the written material on Trissa’s desk was patient records. There was an extensive journal detailing Sam’s medical history, including a range of treatments Trissa had attempted.
